Cave Story is a fairly recent video game. It was developed more than five years ago by Japanese developer Daisuke "pixel" Amaya in his spare time. The game has received generally favorable reviews from those who have played it. A release on several different gaming platforms has also helped it gain a widespread following. The game follows the story of five-year old hero, Cave Man, who lives in a cave on the verge of extinction.
You play the role of Cave Man and must explore the various rooms and enemies within the Cave. Each room corresponds to a series of switches that turn the stage on or off. There are many secrets to find, such as weapons, costumes, and power ups. Most of the levels are very lengthy, but some are short, requiring quick thinking and precise movement to solve. The majority of the music is composed by Masane Takahashi. His music is very atmospheric, and fitting for a game this serious.
The graphics are fairly simplistic for a PC game, though some 3D effects add a nice touch. The controls are simple and do not offer a great deal of depth or complexity. The game has received mixed reviews, however most have been positive. Many critics have stated that the game is too simplistic in its approach, and that it lacks substance. Critics also point out that the audio and voice over work are below par.
