Developer AWK has created GodAI for Mac to put the user (literally) in the middle of the story. Using an AI model installed on your computer, the free game comes alive as soon as you start. Everything you write influences the world being created within the text.
There are no graphics or illustrations, so GodAI relies entirely on your imagination and choices to shape the story. Another AI-based text game is Façade, in which the AI is represented by two onscreen characters that you converse with.
What is GodAI?
It looks like a standard text-driven game where you choose from predefined choices at specific points, making you branch off towards one of the pre-set endings. However, GodAI is based on AI modelling, so it’s a literary ‘open-world’ adventure.
You can interact with anything featured in the text. The AI will respond to the content and tone of what you write, rather than merely selecting one of several pre-ordained responses.
How much does GodAI cost?
You can name your own price for GodAI. When you click on the download button, a window will appear with a suggested amount you can pay and the option to choose a different amount. You can choose to support the developer’s work on the evolution of this app and any others that they’re working on or download it for free.
How do you play GodAI?
It’s the literary equivalent of an open-world video game. You can react to the unfolding story as you wish, and choose how to interact with the existing content. There are no limits to how it can evolve because the AI responds to your real-world input instead of just mapping certain elements of what you write to pre-programmed responses.
You'll need a fairly high-spec computer because the developer recommends that you have an AI model running on it and a CUDA-enabled GPU.
How can I get GodAI?
Because GodAI is still under development, it’s not available in any app store. Therefore, it’s best to get from a reputable site such as the developer’s official website. Downloading it from anywhere else could end up with you inadvertently installing malware along with it.
Text gaming at its best
We like AWK’s refreshing take on the AI-driven story game. Eschewing graphics and combining the writer’s imagination and artificial intelligence is extremely refreshing. For a more cerebral open-world adventure, GodAI is an excellent option for a few hours of entertainment.
