0_abyssalSomewhere is a free adventure game with horror elements that have similar atmospheres to Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Harmful and Cold Shot. You wander through various abyss levels, working your way through each level with obstacles trying to stop you. The atmosphere is incredibly eerie, and it brings you back to PlayStation 1 days with the visuals and sound.
Each stage brings some pains and memories with it, and you’ll need to discover what the meaning is along the way. It has themes of blood, metal and rust, while some levels have heavy rain that makes it hard to see what you’re doing. You’ll also need to fight some shades if you want to make it out alive.
A dark atmosphere
If you’re a horror game fan, you’ll love the dark atmosphere that 0_abyssalSomewhere delivers. It’s reminiscent of Silent Hill and Resident Evil games that originally launched for first-generation consoles. You’ll see similar themes in the walls and floors, with many levels looking the same.
The main plot revolves around your character trapped in the abyss. You’ll come across areas where you’ll need to solve puzzles, while other places require you to fight. Each stage presents different themes, so there’s always something new to discover.
Combat system
You’ll have a sword and shield to aid you in your adventure. There are shades and strange creatures to combat, and you’ll head back to a checkpoint when you respawn. The mechanics are slightly clunky, and it’s challenging to target an enemy. You also won’t have any advanced combos or skills to develop.
Retro visuals and audio
As with the mentioned retro horror games, the graphics match the same themes with blood, death, and metal. While it has outdated visuals, it brings a sense of nostalgia that makes the atmosphere even creepier. It also has similar sounds that accompany you on every level.
Through the abyss
0_abyssalSomewhere, while having a strange name, delivers a horrifying experience with retro graphics and sounds. The combat is a bit quirky, but you’ll still have fun slashing your enemies on each level.
The one aspect that stands out is the heavy rain, which is reminiscent of Silent Hill: Downpour.
