Free Video Cutter is a tiny application with a micro footprint. It has an ultra standard user interface that has very familiar drop-down menus. Free Video Cutter can convert, import and export MPEG4, DivX, WMV, MOV, FLV or MP3 formats. Free Video Cutter has a few import options to choose from, and the higher the precision, the longer it will take to import the file. The application does, however, have very few output options to choose from and irritatingly you also are unable to hear any sound whilst the conversion/import is operating. Supported output formats include: MPEG 1/2, MPEG4, DivX, Xvid, AVI, WMV, MOV, FLV, and MP3 (only audio). Free Video Cutter also allows you to rip the audio data from a video file and create your soundtracks. Overall, Free Video Cutter is a very easy to use application that is ideal for cutting video for uploading to YouTube etc. Just don't expect much in the way of extras.

Nero is great at making professional tools accessible, without necessarily cutting features. The real-time preview lets you hear what an effect will sound like without having to wait for the whole effect to be applied. Once you're done editing, save your file in its original format, or choose a different format to convert it. If your hardware didn't come with any software, you can also use Nero Wave Editor to obtain the audio from analogue line-in or a digital input, providing your computer supports it. Learning Curve Audio editing software isn't the easiest to get to grips with, but Nero Wave Editor does let you undo all changes if your edits take a wrong turn, so there's nothing wrong with experimentation.
