Pokemon Ash Gray is a free adventure game by developer Metapod23. It is a modified version of the Gameboy Advance Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. This means that, unlike original Pokemon games like Pokemon Go or Pokemon Duel, this is a hack of the aforementioned Pokemon games.
But don't be afraid; you won't get hacked! Rom hacks are heavily modified versions of games that change major aspects and add new levels or modes to play, among other things. In this case, it follows the show's first two seasons, where Ash Ketchum travels throughout Kento to become a Pokemon Master.
Game mechanics are the same
Pokemon Ash Gray doesn't add new gameplay mechanics. Instead, it sticks to the originals. You navigate the world, talk to different characters, and when you encounter Pokemon, you go to a battle screen, where you can fight using different abilities from your own Pokemon.
The objective is to collect Pokemon, make them stronger and defeat the other Pokemon trainers to become a Pokemon Master.
What’s changed then?
The original games didn't follow the anime story, while Pokemon Ash Gray does. There are also new graphics and longer routes, as well as other modifications in the environment.
But what Pokemon fans will truly appreciate is that even if it follows the story closely, it lets you make your own decisions, with consequences that you would also expect in the anime. If you do follow the story, you'll be presented with events and situations of the original story, which is very rewarding.
Best played if you already went through the originals
This game is very polished, but some things are specifically designed for hardcore fans. For instance, the Elite Four have Level 80 Pokemons, which are pretty complicated to defeat. There are also some instances where navigating the map can be confusing, such as getting inside the Violet City gym.
An excellent hack for Pokemon lovers
Pokemon Ash Gray will keep Pokemon fans entertained for hours. It's a great addition to your Pokemon library if you want to relive the best moments of the anime.
The elements from the original game are all there: addictive battles, beautiful retro graphics and free-roaming of the world.
