Wordle is a free word game for Mac that lets you select letters to guess the word of the day. After your make your attempt, it will show you which letters you got right and wrong. You are given clues to help you work out what the solution is.
Other word games you’ll enjoy include Bookworm and factori, albeit they have different gameplay mechanics. Wordle is simpler by nature, but you only have six attempts to guess the five-letter word. It also features victory progression saved over time.
Guess the word
This browser game works by asking you to guess the five letters that make up the word of the day. Every day, it changes to a new word that you’ll need to solve again. You can also download the webpage to play offline on your Mac.
After you make the first guess, Wordle will indicate which letters you have right in the following way:
- Green: Letter is correct in the right block
- Yellow: Letter is in the word but in the wrong block
- Grey: The letter is not in the word
When you win, you receive points that save on your I.P. address. If you play on a different browser or cookies don’t save, then the progress continues to future games. Players use this point system to compare with each other.
Easy to cheat
One of Wordle’s features makes it easy to cheat and win in the first round. With the ability to share your win on social media, you just need to wait until someone does so. It takes the fun out of the word game, so we recommend staying away from Twitter or other social media sites until you have completed your word for the day.
Wordle is an enjoyable challenge if you want to guess the word each day and feel good about your problem-solving abilities. It has spawned versions in other languages, while there are also other types available. One example is Worldle which features geography for you to guess a country.
It may not appeal to everyone, but at least you have saved progression to brag about your skills. There’s no mention of future updates as yet.
