The Smoke Room: Summer Special is a free visual novel game that’s a sequel to a previous horror game. The animal friends need a vacation after their last adventure, so they’re heading to the beach. Other visual novels you might enjoy are The Case of the Serialized Killer, Infinite Stars - The Visual Novel and Contract Demon.
You won’t have much to do except read how the characters talk to each other. Sometimes, the conversation isn’t exactly mature, but you’ll be eager to see what they discuss next. You’ll have some choices along the way, but they don’t really affect the outcome of the game. The story will continue, regardless.
Talking among friends
When you play The Smoke Room: Summer Special, you’ll meet a few animal friends walking on two legs like humans. When they’re not speaking to one another, there are cutscenes taking them from one place to another. The conversations are casual, and characters will fade in and out of a scene when it’s their turn to speak or leave.
Choosing outfits and items
On occasion, The Smoke Room: Summer Special offers the chance to do something other than read dialogue. One scene at the clothing store has you choosing clothes and accessories for each character. There are more choices later’ but it won’t affect the main storyline.
2D graphics and text
The visuals in The Smoke Room: Summer Special are 2D cartoons, with the lips moving randomly when they speak. There are only a few times when you’ll see an arm lift or the pose change. The text is at the bottom with no voice acting, but at least you can save your location in the game if you become bored.
Casual day out
The Smoke Room: Summer Special doesn’t deliver much action, but gamers that love visual novels will appreciate the effort made by the developers for the fans. The same animal characters are back, taking some time off in the sun.
The plot is hidden in the dialogue as the friends talk to each other about random topics. You can skip text if you want to get to the gameplay, which doesn’t last long. It’s ideal for hardcore readers who just want to enjoy casual gamplay.
