The Keeper is a free mystery game for Mac developed by Comp-3 Interactive, who created it during the 2021 Haunted PS1 Summer of Shivers Game Jam. Community members praised it and many considered it a highlight of the event.
It's a first-person mystery adventure. After waking up on your fishing boat, you make your way back to shore. Something isn't right, so you decide to investigate, and you must unravel the mysteries that present themselves to you. If playing mystery and horror games interests you, Slender: The Eight Pages is another suitably atmospheric option.
After a night of fishing, you're on your way home, but the impenetrable fog and the erratic behaviour of the lighthouse keeper cause you to run aground on a mysterious island populated only by a lighthouse.
Your boat's damaged, and you want to find out why the lighthouse keeper turned the light off at the critical moment. You make your way ashore and enter the lighthouse to remonstrate with the Keeper. However, it quickly becomes apparent that something's not right. You must uncover the mystery, so you'll have to search for items that are useful during your exploration.
It's quick to learn the game controls because there are only six of them. Apart from normal movement using the W, A, S and D keys, you can interact with items, check your inventory, jump, crouch and focus. You perform all these actions using your keyboard and mouse.
The developer has sensibly obtained official licensing for the music in the game, which also lets users feature it in their gameplay videos.
Intriguing mystery game
Given how quickly Comp-3 Interactive had developed it for the game jam, The Keeper is very impressive in terms of gameplay and graphics. If you add in the fact that this was only the second game this developer had ever created, it bodes extremely well for future projects.
