StartPage is a small but powerful internet application that allows users to easily access Google search services. It was developed by the two founders of Krabi Mobile - Ong Hwee and Zeebaert van der Steen. The application enables you to quickly find information about a particular product or service on the internet. StartPage uses a combination of algorithms, user preferences, statistics and feeds so that the results generated are not only relevant to the particular search query, but also provide instant links to relevant content.
StartPage offers an intuitive interface that allows the user to search a large database of products and services from different vendors. The application boasts of several additional features, such as: automatic back linking to social networking and bookmarking sites, the ability to browse through various Wikipedia pages and numerous international currency converters. Apart from the standard features offered by StartPage, the application boasts of some additional features like: custom search engine optimization (SEO), an integrated AdSense advertising network, the ability to monitor keyword trends and the ability to publish and share web contents in a variety of publishing platforms including Blogger, WordPress, Joomla!, Drupal and Magenta. However, most of these features are quite useful for a business user who wants to provide search results that are customized to the requirements of his business. StartPage claims to have implemented "smart tag" technology that helps the user to customize the displayed search result to better reflect his business needs.
StartPage has been criticized on the other hand for some of its technical aspects. For example, the StartPage software does not implement a proxy server that can hide your IP address. Moreover, the privacy policy provided by StartPage for the private proxy servers does not guarantee complete security and privacy. Furthermore, the search engines have moved on and do not show search results which use StartPage's "prefetch" feature, which means that StartPage data is not available to search engines upon requests. However, StartPage's chief weakness, its limited ability to hide your IP address, its commercial structure and lack of privacy policy, are more than enough reasons to avoid using StartPage, except if you are prepared to put up with the few minor inconveniences that you will have to deal with.
