Writer is the word processor inside LibreOffice. Use it for everything, from dashing off a quick letter to producing an entire book with tables of contents, embedded illustrations, bibliographies and diagrams. Calc tames your numbers and helps with difficult decisions when you're weighing the alternatives. Impress is the fastest and easiest way to create effective multimedia presentations. Draw lets you build diagrams and sketches from scratch. A picture is worth a thousand words, so why not try something simple with box and line diagrams? PhotoScape X
PhotoScape X for Mac is a well presented app for viewing and editing photos. It offers a whole host of tools that make viewing your favourite pictures a lot easier. Although the user interface is basic in appearance, you do have the choice of several themes, which add a bit of colour and variety to this functional app. Once you click on an image, you can start editing straight away using common tools like Resize, Crop, Colour Adjustment, Eye Correction, Sharpen and Blur. Once you've finished editing you can then save your image in the same location or choose to save it separately. Photos can also be shared on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Picasa and Flickr. PhotoScape X for Mac also features a GIF creation tool, which is great when you consider you don't pay a penny for this application. You can also batch edit multiple photos and merge photos to create fun collages. All in all, PhotoScape X for Mac is a very functional, photo editing app, that is a great alternative to iPhoto.
Pages
Pages is the answer to the wildly popular Microsoft Word that is frequently used by PC users around the world. With the launch of the OS Mavericks, Apple has tried to change the definition of Pages with a beautiful new interface, some powerful tools for editing and a few great templates as well. The new Pages application is elegant, intuitive and comes with a really useful collaboration feature. For users of Microsoft Word or even the older Pages application, getting to know the new Pages might take some time but it is definitely worth the effort. It comes free with new Mac products and can be purchased separately or with the iWork Suite as well. Graphics are always an area Apple excels in, which can be seen here as well. Apple, as usual, has gone for a very visual design. The code has been completely rewritten and there are over 60 new templates available. The interface is visually appealing. The toolbar has been simplified with a new format panel. The header and footer can be applied directly by clicking on the document. If someone has a link to the document, they view or collaborate on its latest version through iCloud. The language support has also been improved with the new version. The bottom line on Apple Pages is that it not only looks great, it works extremely well too. The tables, graphics and charts are great options and it has a more unified format that can even handle the MS Word documents.
