Duke Nukem 3D - Legacy Edition is a free mod for Duke Nukem 3D by marcolino123. While there are other Duke Nukem-related mods out there for PC, such as Duke Nukem Forever: Enhanced Mod or even strange titles like Duke Theft Auto, this is arguably one of the best Duke experiences out there.
This is thanks to the many improvements and additions to the original Duke Nukem 3D, making it a perfect fit for fans of the original game, and curious players looking to experience an old-school title with a fresh view.
A lot of new stuff
Duke Nukem 3D - Legacy Edition is packed with new assets, including enemies, weapons and more. For example, as if pig cops weren’t enough, now there’s the beta pig cop, not to mention the Beta Overlord. To defeat them, you can now choose weapons like a flamethrower and plasma gun, which were absent in the original game.
But that’s not all. There’s an extra life system, which the developer claims is needed, a better soundtrack, and some other changes, includsing incredible final fight.
Rebalancing or unbalancing?
Many FPS mods tend to ‘balance’ the game towards being a hardcore experience. This is also the case in Duke Nukem 3D - Legacy Edition, which could bring you to tears if you’re not prepared for the challenge. Everything is noticeably more challenging, and you’ll need to strategise more.
The developer unapologetically confesses he even developed an extra life system because the game becomes so difficult. Also, there’s a scoring system for checking kills numbers and time, and even different fire mods for several weapons.
Better get ready for it
Duke Nukem 3D - Legacy Edition is the perfect nightmare for the unprepared, but a joy for veteran Duke Nukem 3D players looking for a new challenge. This is a very active mod that’s constantly being worked on, and even more features are coming, such as new episodes, skill levels, enemies and more.
While it changes how Duke Nukem 3D plays, it doesn’t change how it looks, so if you’re expecting updated graphics or better effects and animations, you'll be better served elsewhere.
Overall, it’s a solid addition to the base game that breathes life into this almost 30-year old title.
