Nowadays, anyone with Windows can battle it out in a chess match against strong AI right in the comfort of their own home with Chess 2020. This game has different levels of difficulty and six different piece styles to choose from depending on which version you own.
Produced by Filip Höfer, this modern version of the classic game comes at a cost for the full version. However, there’s also a free edition that you can download. Similar games you can try are Free Chess and Chess Titans.
First round
Once the program installation is complete, Chess 2020 will open, and players will be invited to start a new game.
The free version has three levels of play available at the beginning, whereas the paid version has a total of 12 levels available. The highest level is appropriately titled Grandmaster, where your skills will be put to the test.
Moving the first piece starts the clock; the game begins tracking movement history too. In the free version, you won’t have the option to save your game, but the core features function.
Graphics and features
This particular edition of the classic game uses 4K Ultra HD graphics. Another feature is the advisor, there to assist in-game. This is great for those who want to learn the basics of the game or improve. Chess 2020 is also available in four different languages: English, German, French and Czech. For those who need it, their website also has a copy of the game’s rules.
Not ready for the tournament?
If you aren’t quite ready to play a grandmaster at the next tournament, Chess 2020 can help you hone your skills. This is especially true if you’re just learning the game.
With this game, you can focus on learning to maximise the strengths of individual pieces, get a sense of the strategies required to perform well and practice making mistakes without pressure.
