Flappy Mac is a free 2D platform game where you fly around as an old Macintosh computer attempting to avoid obstacles along the way. You can play in both 1bit and 8bit graphics, where the latter adds some colour to the black and white environment. The goal is to reach 100 points if you want to master the game, which is harder than it sounds.
There are 10 characters to unlock, which you can then use to take on the challenge again. The developer used this game to learn about coding on a Mac device. There are a limited number of floppy disks available if you want the source code to design your own title. Similar games include Passing By and Gotta Fly!
Flapping between obstacles
Retro games are appearing everywhere lately, all varying in design and function. Flappy Mac hails back to the golden age of 1bit and 8bit coding as an adventure in learning how to make games. There isn’t much to it but to survive for as long as possible to achieve the ultimate score.
The primary difference between the two is providing some colour in the 8bit version. Besides the 10 characters you can unlock, there are several scenarios to enjoy.
Easy gameplay
The name refers to the Mac computer that flaps up and down to pass between objects. You need to flap harder to rise and stop to drop down. You need to have impeccable timing if you want to win.
Intriguing visuals and sound
While the design and colours may be basic, there are some interesting twists to squeeze through objects. The developer also made sure to add intriguing sounds, some of which may make you giggle. It’s an enjoyable experience and not a bad game for a first development while learning how to code.
Flying as a Mac
Flappy Mac’s appeal may vary depending on the audience. If you’re into casual, retro arcade games that challenge you to beat scores, then it works. However, action junkies may quickly become bored or frustrated with the controls and lack of enemies to shoot.
Overall, it’s a fun game to try out, and it may be worth trying to get the floppy disk source code.
