Doom is a highly addictive first person shooter game developed by id Software for MS DOS. In the game, players assume the role of an interplanetary space marine, commonly referred to as Doom Guy, defending his home against waves of demonic invaders from Hell. A group of military personnel are stranded on an unfamiliar planet and are seeking a means of escape. Along their way, they come across several experimental weapons capable of wiping out large numbers of Hell warriors. After successfully using these weapons to destroy the invaders, the military men are given a chance to fight another battle - this one with the demonic legions they've been fighting against.
The player can choose between playing either with the keyboard or the mouse, although using both has its advantages. The Doom95 game engine includes several user-created maps and campaigns, as well as a variety of Doom scenarios and enemies. These user-made maps and campaigns can be run through the Windows side of the Doom interface, or through the console, allowing the user to experience the intense action of shooting demons in the face just like the games.
Unlike other games based on the Doom series, DOOM 95 for windows is available to play through the front panel of Microsoft Windows, rather than through dos versions of the game. This is a fairly unique feature considering that DOOM was originally intended for Unix-based operating systems, and the fact that DOOM was one of the first games developed primarily for the PC's (and later, the Macs) operating systems. Many of the level editors included with DOOM 95 for windows are the same tools used in the DOS version of the game. Additionally, a number of user-made add-ons have been released for the doom that work on both the Macintosh and the Windows operating systems.
