Plants vs. Zombies are an upcoming tower defense game developed and released by PopCap Games. First released for Windows and Mac OS X initially, the game was later port to handhelds, consoles, and numerous mobile devices. The game involves the player taking on the role of a carefree homeowner in an Eco-versus Zombie wasteland. Players must protect his/her house from a massive array of zombies who have somehow infected most of the surrounding areas.
Plants vs. Zombies incorporate many of the characteristics of other tower defense games. For example, players are required to strategically plant seeds in order to generate food, as well as lure zombies towards a vulnerable spot in order to weaken and isolate them for easy pickings. A new feature in the game enables players to control plants with the help of cards, coins, and energy bars. Additionally, certain plants grow faster when placed next to other plants, which could prove to be quite helpful in a challenging level.
The majority of the game's mechanics are similar to those of popular Tower Defense games, including building towers to block off dangerous zombies, acquiring coins and energy to power up various tools, researching trees and plants to create protection barriers, and defending the house against waves of zombies and the undead. As one might expect, there are a few minor differences in the way the game is played, such as a mini-game where plants vs. zombies must survive a series of obstacles before being able to move on to the next room. The mini-games are also somewhat briefer than the main menu, which makes them less frustrating but still offers the same amount of enjoyment. The overall goal of the game is to prevent all zombies from entering the home and causing damage to the household, though it is not without risk, as even when protected by a well-made defense mechanism all zombies are unable to resist the effects of gravity and will inevitably fall prey to the family's creativity.
