Crash Bandicoot: On the Run by King and Activision is a mobile adaptation of the console-based, endless running game. It combines party events, platform gaming and kart racing. It’s now available on Android, bringing back much-loved characters and introducing a new storyline to keep veteran fans interested.
Original story
The mobile release reintroduces the familiar characters Crash and Coco, taking them on a new adventure. This time, you learn that Doctor Neo Cortex dispatched henchmen across all the worlds to enslave the dimensions.
It’s on you to fight these minions back. You’ll go on battle runs around the iconic Wumpa Island tracks, and create a weapon arsenal to defeat enemies and bring peace back to the multiverse.
Simple mechanics
The developers kept the mechanics simple for Android smartphones, making this release like running titles such as Temple Run 2 and Subway Surfers.
You control Crash as he’s racing the tracks. Swipe left and right to change lanes and up or down to jump or slide. Tap the screen, and the titular character performs a spin attack against the enemies that pop up.
The simplified gameplay still contains hidden paths on each level. There are also base-building elements to help you craft weapons and complete challenges.
Classic locations and characters
This release sends you on new challenges across the three locales from the previous Wumpa Archipelago-based titles. You’ll run through Turtle Woods, Temple Ruins and the Lost City.
The game hosts the multiverse’s most dangerous villains to keep old players on their toes and several new enemies with unique abilities.
Multiplayer gameplay
Apart from single-player, the mobile version also includes multiplayer runs. The leaderboards promote a competitive spirit between the players, adding an extra gameplay challenge. All you need is an internet connection to join the massive multiplayer Bandicoot world.
You can unlock new skins and weapons by running for prizes. While the game is obtainable free of charge, some of these items are available through in-app purchases, too.
Straightforward yet addictive
Overall, Crash Bandicoot: On the Run for Android offers a simplified experience but manages to retain all the best elements from the PlayStation titles. The learning curve is close to non-existent, and you can run it without paying a cent. It’s ideal as a pastime or an entertainment source as you compete against your friends.
