Free trail and map planner
ViewRanger is both a website and an app that is available for free on mobile devices, including Android phones. Thanks to its built-in maps and offline GPS support, you can use it to plan hiking, biking, and even skiing trails and routes.
If you’re a fan of the great outdoors, you may have noticed a rise in route-planning apps such as OS Maps, AllTrails, and MapOut. Some of these are UK-specific (e.g. OS Maps) as they use British Ordnance Survey data, but others, like ViewRanger, can be used anywhere in the world.
What is ViewRanger?
ViewRanger works on any mobile device running Android and features thousands of routes from across the globe. Some of these trails come courtesy of other users, but you’ll also find official maps and routes from established organisations like Ordnance Survey, Northern Stroll, and Walkingworld.
Free vs Paid
There’s a wealth of content available through the app for free, but if you’re a hardcore hiker or looking for something a bit fancier than a straightforward walk, premium subscription options are also available.
These options include map packs, automatically generated routes, and even augmented reality (you can view virtual arrows that guide you). Some of these options are arguably more of a gimmick, but there’s no denying you’ll get your money’s worth if you take regular treks. You might even find a new favourite route!
ViewRanger is not just for hikes
The app excels in finding hikes and walks, whether it’s a steady stroll along a river or something adventurous in a mountain range. However, depending on your location, you can also find bicycle routes, ski paths, and even nature trails, if you’re a keen photographer.
You also don’t need to worry about being online when you’re out and about—simply save any maps in the app before you set off and ViewRanger’s GPS will still function. It’s also possible to save stats as distance travelled and altitude reached, which you can then share on social media.
An excellent outdoor app
ViewRanger is an easy recommendation for anyone who enjoys regular outdoor activities. The app also promotes safety, thanks to being partnered with over 400 international search and rescue companies. Its BuddyBeacon technology lets your friends track your location in real-time, even without the ViewRanger app. It's a nice complementary app to health and fitness apps that are also available in the market today.
