The Tamil calendar is based on Moon and Star events and is followed by Tamil people in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. The year starts on 14th April and is divided into six seasons, each lasting for two months. The day starts with sunrise and ends with sunset. The week days are named after the planets in the solar system. The calendar follows a 60-year cycle, similar to other calendars in the Indian subcontinent. The fifth month Aavani and the tenth month Thai are considered very auspicious for weddings and other events, while the fourth month Aadi is considered inauspicious.
