Free social platform

Since 2005, Reddit has been among the more popular, established social media platforms for sharing news, interests and events in the lives of users worldwide. Fans and users engage in expanding ideas and discussion of topics by posting links, texts, images and videos. The free website is available on PC, Mac, iOS, Android and the majority of other operating systems and browsers.

Users like posts that are agreeable. However, as not everyone uses the thumb up (upvote) or thumb down (downvote) button, their tallies aren’t an accurate indicator of a post’s popularity. A virtual gathering space for individuals and groups from around the globe, Reddit’s user base largely comes from the USA at 49.3%. Similar apps include Twitter and Tweetdeck.

Using the platform

Posts end up in two different user-created categories: ‘communities’ and ‘subreddits’. Some of the other website-specific jargon that novice users might need to know include ‘community-specific moderator’. These individuals aren’t employees, they’re active registered users in the moderation of their Reddit communities.

Upvote and downvote are two features that determine whether a post will make it to the front page of the website. The users and moderators quantify the ‘karma’ of a post or of a comment on this platform by scoring it a number. On your profile, karma statistics become publicly viewable to anyone on the internet.

‘Reddit, dive into anything’

The numbers of comments and upvotes or downvotes are shown on each post. There’s a button for sharing a post and also for saving it. Clicking on the three vertical dots opens a two-option pop-up menu from where you can hide or report a post. Communities have rules, and moderators are the ones who update the contents of them. Reddit also has its own rules.

Usernames start with u/ in a unique ‘Reddit’ style. On their homepage, you can see posts that are trending today, which is followed by popular posts in communities and subreddits. Original posts are marked with a blue OC label which stands for Original Content. You can also use Filter by Flair to sort the posts by filters like ‘Quality Post’ and ‘Overdone’.

Social Community

Reddit is a vast social community that shares ideas without restraint. It’s a breeding ground for news and scandals, and many people don’t hold back on what they say. Still, there’s no denying that it has a massive membership and users love expressing their opinions.
