Free app for identifying plants

If you’re interested in plants, and you aren’t a botanist, PlantNet is a must-have app for plant identification on your Android device. For it to work correctly, you need to be running Android 4.1 or newer. The PlantNet app is one of the projects run by the Floris'Tic project, and it aims to increase public interest in plant sciences.

What you learn about the plant in your photograph could inspire you to learn more and extend your knowledge of plant life in general. Furthermore, your photo could end up being used in the app to illustrate that species. If you want to try some other plant identification apps, iNaturalist, Picture This and Garden Answers are also worth checking out.

Is the PlantNet app safe?

Yes, it is safe to use, provided you only download it from a reputable source. If you download it from another site, it could be bundled with malware, so we recommend getting it directly from Google. Also, there's no obligation to create an account, but you can sign into the app with your Google account if you wish.

Is PlantNet free?

Yes, it’s free to install without any ads. If you wish to support the Floris’Tic project, you can make a donation through the PlantNet website.

How do you identify a plant on PlantNet?

The PlantNet app works best when you take a close-up photo of a plant, leaf or bud.

The developer points out that although it can be helpful to have a photo of the whole plant or tree, it won’t usually show enough detail to enable its identification. It's also more accurate when you photograph plants in their natural state instead of being cultivated for use in public parks and gardens.

Identify any plant

The PlantNet app is an excellent way to identify plants simply by photographing them. The interface is clean and extremely easy to navigate, which is another aspect that encourages use.

Every smartphone owner is carrying a camera, so it makes perfect sense to offer an app that anyone can use to identify plants and contribute to this crowd-sourced database of wild plants. In our view, creating this app is an intelligent move by the Floris'Tic project. It encourages interest among the general public and even helps to identify plant species around the world.
