Potplayer - Minimalistic Media Player

Simply put, Potplayer is a media player, with a good-looking interface and a number of options to configure, to optimize the experience of consuming media. Users can play Blueray, DVD, Audio, CD, and a number of other formats. It can be configured with a number of devices such as TV or HDTV. A number of unique features and configurations make Potplayer fun and easy to use.

What are the main features of Potplayer?

A number of configuration options allow Potplayer to be a simple, personalized, user-friendly interface for media consumption. You can play music or videos from files stored on the computer or read CDs and DVDs from the device input. Potplayers offers DIVs subtitle support, SUP subtitle support and allows multiple formats to be played seamlessly.

The screen capture feature is unique and fun, where users can take a screenshot of the media being played, and save the image in a JPEG format. A clean design allows for easy navigation. The media player also has codec and multiple format support, so a number of media files can be played.

An in-built screen recorder supports live streaming, which goes beyond its functionality of simply being a media player. It supports downloaded media as well as streaming audio and video. There is also an in-built video editor, which allows you to adjust video sound and quality.

Potplayer can also source files from web-browsing, apart from the local files on the system. URLs, FTP servers, local storage, digital and analog TV, and Blu-rays and DVDs are all sources from where Potplayer can import and play media.

What are the benefits of using Potplayer?

For casual consumption of music or videos, Potplayer is ideal. Its minimalist design ensures easy navigation and is hassle-free to play movies, music, or videos on. Unlike other players like Windows Media Player, Potplayer can browse and source files not only from the downloaded media but can stream or browse from URLs, FTP services, or  Blue-rays and DVDs.

It is very easy to download and sync subtitles, which opens up the spectrum of videos that you can watch, in a number of languages. Subtitles syncing is easy and can be customized. You can actually alter the appearance of the text on the screen and add subtitles manually as well.

The video editing tool is not something many other media players have. This is a big plus for content creators, who can easily sharpen or blur the video, rotate and adjust, or clear sound by reducing noise levels. Other than that, plenty of customization options are available on Potplayer, which makes the media consumption experience pleasant and satisfying.

What to look out for in Potplayer?

Potplayer with its simplistic design is not very intuitive to use. For first time users, it takes a while to figure out how to really start using the program correctly. How to import media, and how to browse files also takes a while to understand. The lack of online and offline support is also a major hindrance. Sometimes, even the availability of too many options and configurations can be confusing.

Some online reviews complain of bugs and an inability to play videos from Blu Rays.  At first glance, users are left to figure it out, themselves. The player does not suit those who are first-time users. On asking for help, support is slow to respond and does not provide many solutions.

What are the alternatives to Potplayer?

VLC Media Player, KM Player, VLC Reddit, Media Player Classic, MPV are some of the programs that can be alternatives to Potplayer. KM Player has a very similar interface and usability to Potplayer; interestingly, it was built by the same team. In terms of features and functionality, both are almost interchangeable. However, Potplayer differs because of its design and look, which is a lot cleaner and sleeker than KM Player.

VLC media player has a completely different look and feel as that of Potplayer, and while VLC is a lot more popular, Potplayer is better with features of video editing and subtitle sync. Video editing and streaming features allow Potplayer to be a preferred choice for content creators and editors, while VLC is good for playing media from a number of sources. VLC also has a more evolved and extensive features bar, that is easy to navigate and instantly understandable. Potplayer is not as intuitive, and this might be the reason for VLC having the popularity that it does. In an attempt to be simple and minimalistic, Potplayer can be confusing and hard to navigate at the beginning.

Streaming platforms like Youtube, Amazon Music, Spotify, etc. are also competing for the same space of media consumption. While online streaming platforms are dependent on internet speeds and wifi connection, Potplayer, like other media players, has the advantage of playing files that are downloaded or created on the local drive or DVDs, Blu Rays, or CDs. This level of personalization is still not available on streaming platforms, where content is pushed, and not owned by the user.

What’s the final word on Potplayer?

Potplayer has a good looking, sleek design, which supports a number of media files, both audio and video. An excellent player to play media from external sources like DVDs, CDs, Blue Rays, or even through browsing sources like URLs, FTPs, etc. However, for someone just starting to use the player, it takes a while to figure out how exactly to use it, and the interface is a lot less intuitive than say a VLC player. Potplayer is most closely comparable to KMPlayer, which are made by the same developers, but stands out because of better design and enhanced features.
