Age of Empires III, also known as Age of Empires: The Conqueror, is the follow-up to the successful Age of Empires II game developed by Microsoft. Age of Empires II, followed up by Age of Kings, was a major boost to the popularity of Age of Empires, but it was never able to reach the same level of commercial success that other versions of the series achieved. The lack of content and graphic updates, as well as problems with the interface and the game engine, led to a significant decrease in the sales of the game. Fortunately, however, Age of Empires III has been able to successfully overcome these problems and is now on its way to reach the top of the sales chart.
Age of Empires III features all the classic elements of the real series, such as the economy and units, as well as new technologies and graphics for the game play. It also has several new components, including the historical battles that occur within each civilization, and includes a new mission system that lets you command your soldiers while in battle. The Mac port of the game has also been updated with several new features, including support for the flash plugin Common Adobe Flash. The closed beta of the game that was available last month included several new features, including the option for the user to select which civilization he/she would be a part of, and display the flag of their civilization in the game list.
Age of Empires III has several new features that are not present in any of the previous games, including the ancient civilizations of the Age of Mythology, a new technology, Granite Pits which can be used to defend against enemy attacks. There are four different game modes in the game, all of them having their own advantages and disadvantages. The new features include the capture of the Fort, which is more easily achieved if you have more archers than troops; the attack option forces your civilization to attack immediately, but the Fort cannot be captured unless you have a military division of your own; the defensive option which gives your civilization's control over both the economy and the military. The closed beta of the game included two additional campaigns which were the American and Mexican one, and these offer even greater depth of content than the original campaigns.
