SNAGGEMON - A Grunt Dating Sim by Reece Bridger for Windows systems is a free, interactive visual novel, similar to other titles such as Katawa Shoujo, The Smoke Room: Summer Special or Yandere Simulator: Visual Novel. It’s easy to get started with SNAGGEMON, and you can download the most recently-updated version e updated using any Chromium-based browser.
As expected, the story’s outcome depends on your interactions. In this case, the protagonist is a SnaggeMon Master with evident Pokemon influences. This means the main character is similar to a Pokemon Master, and he’s had enough of it.
Interesting story
One of the strong points of this game is the take on Pokemon. Your character has been captured while running some errands and you must interact with your captor via a multiple-choice system.
Your interactions with this gender-neutral opponent can lead to many outcomes, and just like some real-life hostage situations, Stockholm Syndrome is present. It means that romancing the captor is a possible strategy. There are no explicit scenes, but there is some flirtatious language.
Basic mechanics
SNAGGEMON - A Grunt Dating Sim doesn’t offer a great variety of gameplay elements. The only interactions are based on a multiple-choice menu. Even though this interactivity puts it barely above a Youtube experience, the dialogue is voiced, and everything comes down to the story.
The only custom feature is the ability to name the main character, enabling you to add a personal touch to the story.
Tongue-in-cheek Pokemon
If the title doesn’t give it away, SNAGGEMON - A Grunt Dating Sim is a fun take on the Pokemon franchise. It knows it’s a parody and also knows that’s its biggest strength. Everything has a comedic tone, be it Professor Magenta or the Pokemon-like creatures.
This is time well-spent for Pokemon fans who want to enjoy a few laughs with a well-thought-out title parodying the original series, but also showing respect for it. There may be some instances where the pace can feel a bit off, but overall it’s an excellent game if you’re a fan of anime-style visual novels.
