Mendeley is an online free e-reference software developed by Elsevier Inc. for cell phones. This web-based teaching tool allows academics to manage, share and edit various reference materials, such as scholarly journals, book publications and research papers electronically. The program works in conjunction with the Mendeley Learning Server (MLS), an online service provided by Elsevier that allows users to search materials, download them to their computers and then assign keywords to the downloads. Once downloaded and installed on a computer, the user is able to search, retrieve and print reference materials, which can be stored on removable disks, external hard drives or the Mendeley web server (Mendon).
The main features of the Mendeley website are its online resource library and its service for the Mendeley Learning Server. Users can search and access a variety of reference materials such as scholarly journals, encyclopedias and other printed sources, as well as freely available information from the Web's indexing database. The service allows the user to browse and search various topics using keywords and subtopics and then find related resources using keywords and subtopics. After downloading the desired reference, the user can assign keywords to the resource and specify its location on the Mendeley web server. This service functions as a common knowledge resource for all users, which allows the researcher to update his or her research papers using the app without having to download and install a separate reference management app each time.
Elsevier also offers its MRIS (Maltese Management Information System) application that connects to the Mendeley database. MRIS is designed to help educators manage their research papers, while allowing easy referencing from citations. In addition to being able to access citations and use them in the Mendeley app, the MRIS application also lets the researcher add them to a Google map, as well as import them into Excel. The MRIS application can be used as a reference management tool for teachers. The service can also be used to create presentations in the form of PDFs that can be shared with colleagues via the web, allowing them to refer to the main webpage for any new research paper. Other applications include business cards, which allow the organization to create professional-looking business cards that highlight key points of contact and other important information.
