Comodo Free Firewall is a superb replacement for Windows’ default utility. The interface is modern, sleek and intuitive and easy to navigate. Not only is it pleasing on the eyes, it also provides enhanced protection via a constantly updated cloud database to always keep your system as safe as possible. Key Features include: Fast and hassle-free online experience. Manages traffic on your PC. Blocks all Internet attacks. Secures all connections when you are online. Monitors in/out connections. This free firewall protects your computer from all manner of external threats in an efficient and effective way. It uses something called default deny protection (DDP) to prevent any threats from entering, and affecting your system. It works by using a cross reference system to ensure that whenever unknown software has been introduced to your system, Comodo Free Firewall will cross-reference it with a white-list of over 15 million files and apps to see if it is legitimate. If it isn’t then Comodo Free Firewall will alert you that a possibly malicious file is attempting to access your PC. Overall, Comodo Free Firewall is able to block online threats, providing a solid, strong defence for your system against attacks. It includes a robust browser, virtual desktop and sandboxing system. The only downside is the it flags both good and bad files, which can obviously become quite annoying.

Connectify Hotspot

Connectify Hotspot is a relatively lightweight app that allows you to transform your PC into a WiFi Hotspot and share Internet with all your devices . Connectify Hotspot has a really easy to understand and intuitive user interface that makes it simple to manage your connections on your network. Once installed, the configuration process can be done very quickly. Connectify will prompt you to choose the hotspot name, the password, the WiFi device that you want to use, the security mode, and if you want to enable Internet sharing. Connectify Hotspot allows you to explore all the devices that are connected to your network, so you have full control over your wireless network. The app has some really neat features such as the ability to explore shared resources from the devices that are paired with your system. Overall, Connectify Hotspot performs well and has a solid list of features. The app is easy on the eyes and the user interface is simple to get to grips with, even novice users will be able to set-up and use this app with ease. The Pro and Max versions of the app provide more than the basic functions, such as WiFi repeater mode, bridging mode and the ability to share 3G, 4G, and tethered connections.

f.lux

f.lux is a really handy tool that allows you to adjust the colour temperature on your display. If you stare at a screen for too long, then the glare from the display begins to hurt your eyes. To start with, turning down your monitor's brightness may help you, but brightness is not the really issue. The colour temperature is what causes the problems. Most computer screens emit a bluish light, which looks great in daytime, but it becomes uncomfortable to look at when the sun dips below the horizon. Not only can your screen become uncomfortable to look at, it can also affect your sleep patterns*. F.lux works by calculating the approximate sunset time for your location. At sunset, your computer screen will mimic nature, gradually warming up the colours. This, in turn, blends in better with the surrounding light. The app is very easy to navigate and configure in a few clicks. the adjustments can be made with sliders across the main window, which alter the daytime and night time calibrations. If you spend a large amount of time looking at your computer screen, then f.lux is definitely something that you should check out. *There has been research which suggests reading on a tablet for a couple of hours before you go to sleep can delay your sleep pattern by approximately an hour. Supports dec/digital/vt terminal standards. Tera Term is a useful application, which allows the connection to any remote Telnet or SSH hosts. It sports a clean and crisp layout that is easy to work with. The application does not take a long time to wrap your head around and is also very light on system resources. So, if you need a free terminal emulator, which is easy to master and supports remote Telnet or SSH host connections then Tera Term is a good choice.

Photo Booth for Windows 7 is a copy of the Photo Booth application that comes bundled with Mac OS X. This photo taking application allows taking pictures and applying effects like Thermal Camera, Mirror, X Ray, Light Tunnel, Kaleidoscope, Squeeze, Twirl, and Stretch. Photo Booth For Windows 7 is a portable application developed to provide Windows 7 users with a similar experience to Mac’s Photo Booth in that you can quickly take snaps and add effects to them. This application also provides additional effects and some very basic sharing options to upload pictures to social media. As this is a 3rd party developed application and has no affiliation with either Apple or Microsoft, unfortunately the standard is quite low . On the up side there are a few additional effects such as additional mirrors that are not available in the Apple Photo Booth application. Key features include: More than 12 special effects for your webcam. No installation required. Works with all webcams. Lets you share photos on Facebook and Twitter. Once good thing about Photo Booth for Windows 7 is that it doesn’t require installation and is simple to set up. The only requirements are Adobe Flash Player and a webcam. Although Photo Booth for Windows 7 lacks some features found in the original Apple program, it is still not too bad for a free application.

Optional archive encryption using ZipCrypto and AES 256. Context Menu access including the preview archive function. Create or extract multiple zip files simultaneously from windows explorer. Bandizip supports ZipCrypto and AES 256 encryption algorithms for higher security. It also has support for split compression to certain sizes, such as 10MB or 700MB. Besides Windows standard split compression formats such as zip, z01, and z02, it securely supports ALZ, EGG (alz, a01, a02, and vol1.egg, vol2.egg, 7Z(7z.001, 7z.002, and RAR (part1.rar). Bandizip is lightweight, has numerous support features and utilizes super quick Zip algorithms for compression and expansion. If you want to change your current Zip utility then Bandizip is a great tool to try.

CrystalDiskInfo

CrystalDiskInfo is a utility tool that can tell you about the hardware performance of your hard disk, including how likely it is to stop operating in the near future. The app gives you a complete readout of all your computer's SMART information, as well as a current temperature and health status. The interface can be easily navigated by anyone with an OK understanding of hard drives and the Windows OS. From the dashboard you can quickly see a long list of up-to-date system data. CrystalDiskInfo doesn’t have a lot of options here, or settings or deep drill down menus for that matter. It does, however, give you a clear and straightforward interface that shows all of the data it can retrieve* from each drive on your system. CrystalDiskInfo can be configured to send you Alerts in the event that there is an issue with one of the drives being monitored. These alerts can be audible or via email, and you can also configure the frequency of application refresh data. Overall, CrystalDiskInfo is a good, free tool if you have a reasonable level of computer knowledge and want to be kept informed about your system. It is lightweight, and uses hardly any system resources at all. The interface is crisp and clutter free, but the downside is, there is no Help feature with the app, and it does’t provide an explanation for any of the data that is displayed. If you are a novice user, it may be a good idea to try another app. *Various drives implement S.M.A.R.T. in different ways and not every drive tracks or reports every possible value.
