Vonage is a well known name in VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) for providing a quality service with numerous features and benefits. The company also has a selection of mobile apps, which are able to turn your handset into a virtual extension, which doesn't consume cell phone minutes, therefore making it appealing to smartphone users as well as landline users.

Vonage is easy to setup and use, and offers users competitive pricing plans, although Vonage is slightly pricier than some other providers and it lacks some notable features, such as video calling, it is still one of the top contenders for the VOIP crown.

Signing upSigning up to Vonage is an easy process; simply fill in the online forms. Then you will receive and email notifying you about emergency 911-dialling options. Unlike emergency calling with standard phones, Vonage requires your location, which it uses for something called E911 (Enhanced 911). This system allows the emergency operator know your location and callback number.

During the signup process Vonage has you enter three security challenge questions and the option to add your mobile number, in order to receive forwarded calls. A download link is provided to help you get the Vonage app on your phone as well.

PricingVonage uses a subscription pricing model, with plans starting from $9.99 per month for the Vonage base plan. This gives you unlimited calling to landlines and mobiles in the US Canada, and Puerto Rico, for the first year; after 12 months you'll pay $25.99 per month. A Vonage account includes a hardware adapter and telephone number portability, so that you don't have to change your existing number. The adapter is useful as it means you don't need to keep your PC running constantly in order to receive phone service.

Vonage's business plans range from $19.99 per user, per month rising to $39.99 per user, per month, based on volume.

Bottom LineVonage is a key player that delivers a first class call service, and is very simple to setup. In comparison to standard carriers it is relatively inexpensive. However, it does cost more than some other VoIP providers and it does lack a few capabilities, which other providers include. That being said, Vonage is known for crystal clear call quality, and a really helpful support service. They also provide enhanced 911 support and have available Toll-Free numbers.
