Program VirtualBox służy do pełnej wirtualizacji sprzętu x86. Program ten może być używany na serwerach, komputerach stacjonarnych, a także może być wbudowany w inne rozwiązania. Jest to jedyny profesjonalny program tego typu, o otwartym kodzie źródłowym.

Oto niektóre funkcje programu VirtualBox:

  • Modularność. Program VirtualBox ma bardzo modularną budowę oraz dobrze zdefiniowane wewnętrzne interfejsy programistyczne oraz budowę client/serwer. W ten sposób możliwe jest kontrolowanie programu jednocześnie z wielu interfejsów: na przykład można uruchomić wirtualny komputer w typowym interfejsie graficznym, a następnie kontrolować ten komputer z wiersza poleceń lub zdalnie. Program VirtualBox zawiera również pełny pakiet dla programistów: chociaż jest to program o otwartym kodzie źródłowym, nie trzeba zagłębiać się w źródła, aby stworzyć nowy interfejs.
  • Opisy wirtualnych komputerów w języku XML. Ustawienia wirtualnych komputerów są zapisywane całkowicie w języku XML i nie są zależne od lokalnych komputerów. Dlatego definicje komputerów wirtualnych mogą być łatwo przeniesione na inne komputery.

* USB tablet/keyboard emulation for improved user experience if no Guest Additions are available (see the manual for more information).
* LsiLogic SAS controller emulation (see the manual for more information)
* RDP video acceleration (see the manual for more information)
* NAT engine configuration via API and VBoxManage
* Use of host I/O cache is now configurable (see the manual for more information)
* Guest Additions: added support for executing guest applications from the host system (replaces the automatic system presimparation feature; see the manual for more information)
