Il programma Java consente di eseguire applicazioni chiamate "applet" scritte nel linguaggio di programmazione Java. Le applet permettono di avere un'esperienza online molto più ricca di una semplice interazione con pagine HTML statiche.

La tecnologia Java Plug-in, inclusa nel Runtime Environment Java 2, Standard Edition (JRE), stabilisce una connessione tra i più diffusi browser e la piattaforma Java. Java consente alle applicazioni di essere scaricate in una rete ed eseguite all'interno di una sandbox protetta (area virtuale). Le restrizioni di sicurezza sono facilmente imposte nella sandbox.

Molte applicazioni multipiattaforma richiedono anche Java per funzionare correttamente.
